Humjibre Community

In Humjibre, Lionheld has helped create and improve a promising local school which is quickly changing the educational landscape in the area. Founded in 2023 by Enock “Happy” Nkrumah, the Happy International School (HIS) has grown by leaps and bounds in just three years, from 27 initial students to over 300 today, from age 2 through 14 from five neighboring villages! It has become an important employer in Humjibre, providing jobs to 16 teachers and four non-teaching staff.

While its modest fees are sorely stretched to cover basic needs, HIS is also beginning to remove important physical obstacles to learning in the Humjibre area, providing a van to transport even its most distant students safely and constructing a clean on-site drinking water source with adequate bathroom facilities.

Happy International School's largely degreed teachers strive every day to give their students a love of learning, solid literacy, numeracy and critical thinking skills, emotional health, self-confidence and a strong community mindset. They have developed engaging lesson plans that address different learning styles and involve parents in the educational experience, with at least one parent/teacher meeting about individual student progress and challenges each term. Happy International School's educators understand the vital importance of what they do every day.

Going forward, Lionheld has identified five improvement opportunities for education partners like the Happy International School, each aligned with the findings of USAID/Ghanaian Ministry of Education in its 2022 study of needed system reforms. Specifically, the study stressed three high-impact objectives critical in underserved communities such as Humjibre: strengthening instruction, learning materials and student supervision, and improving school and classroom management for better outcomes.

Donor support of Lionheld goes to the heart of these needs, allowing it to expand programs already providing:

Teacher resources and training

Including instruction in creating a positive classroom environment conducive to learning and emotional growth, developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills, building student self-confidence and resilience, and using technology to broaden the educational experience.

Quality teaching materials

Including new textbooks, library books and classroom teaching aids.

Supplies supporting “Whole Child” development

Including nutritious meal programs, sports equipment and musical instruments.

On-site infrastructure

Including teacher/administrator laptops and projectors, computer labs, hygienic eating and bathroom spaces, clean water sources, adequate health facilities, better classrooms/recreational spaces and solutions for safer student transportation.

Fee assistance & scholarships

Selectively help local families pay for school tuition, clothing and basic supplies, as well as offering promising students a partially subsidized educational path toward reaching their full potential.

Francis Kwarteng (6 Years Old) & Vincentia Antwi (9 years old)

Many students at the Happy International School like Francis Kwarteng and Vincentia Antwi come from families who struggle financially to provide their children with the exercise books and other items that support a strong learning experience. When the School identifies a student falling behind due to a lack of educational resources, it strives wherever it can to provide the missing materials, as well as to offer additional lessons and encouragement to quickly eliminate any skill gaps that have arisen. With this support, Francis is now on pace with his classmates and is a thriving, happy student, while Vincentia has become a vital role model for the many girls in her class who face strong societal pressures against embarking on, excelling in and completing their education.
